peonies smell nice.

yesterday as i breathed in the lucious scent of pink peonies i thought...wow those smell like perfume. No! perfume smells like peonies. sometimes we forget that beautiful manmade smells and sights wouldn't exist if not for the inspiration found in God's creation. i intend to be more concious of that fact.

after a month of waiting my double hibiscus bloomed. and with all this heat and no rain i'm not feeling very optimistic about my zinnia crop this year. this little cluster is all i have to show for them so far.

Thursday, April 21, 2011 at 11:50AM yesterday, my girlfriends and i discussed the importance of being grateful. sure, we've each got our own little problems, but our blessings far out weigh the frustrations and disappointments in our lives. that being said, i'm trying to maintain the balance of two different states of mind. one, is to always be looking forward to something. two, is to simultaneously be perfectly content with the things i have and the place i am in life.
today, i'm looking forward to the completion of this little studio space tim built me inside his shop. yesterday i swept and mopped and swept and mopped the floors so today tim could seal the concrete. tim referred to my hard labor as sweat equity- the sweat that goes into my own projects. soon, i will be able to teach myself the art of screenprinting at last!
this spring i am utterly grateful for these peggy martin roses tim planted three years ago. i am thankful for his foresight and his landscaping skills. plants take so much patience. tim is tilling the backyard yet again getting it ready for the grass seed. i can't wait till we finally have grass in our entire back yard! but soon enough, just like these roses, it will come.

above are a couple of items i found at an antique shop tim and i stopped at on our way to the lake. i listed the milk glass vase at young gun here. I would have listed this bull bottle opener as well, but i don't think its vintage, which is alright by me. i don't mind keeping it. ;)

the older i've gotten the more i've realized what a a controversial day valentines is. yesterday i heard lots of opinions and today i'm developing my own. the #1 argument against the holiday seems to be that its too commercial. well, i guess it can be...but its never been that way for me. ever since i was little i handmade intricate and often tiny valentines for each person in my class. one year i remember making one for everyone in my entire high school :O (i attended a pretty small school). also, my family has made its living on retail sales for the past 30 years. handmade jewelry shops, local chocolate factories, and neighborhood flower boutiques depend on days like valentines to get them out of the slump of january. i'm really ok with the holiday. i don't expect dinner out or a big present or even a card. as long as i get a few fresh blooms i'm really quite content.
the roses on the left are from my pops and the bouquet on the right is from tim.
